These two projects for Nauset Construction were very similar. They were podium style residential/mixed-use buildings to accommodate vehicle parking in the basement, mixed-use space on the lower floors, and residential apartment units on higher floors. Both projects were roughly 12,000 square feet, which consisted of about 600 linear feet of one-sided 10-15’ wall, a base slab of 18-24” thick concrete, and a garage ramp going up to slabs on deck. These projects had a unique set of challenges from managing deliveries and crane service on busy Cambridge streets to constructing formwork in the confined space of these tight urban infill sites.
The Apartments at Masse Corner
The concrete work at The Apartments at Masse Corner was primarily completed in the fall of 2017, on budget and schedule. We successfully placed the base slab in two large 600+ yard placements and moved right into setting the one-sided foundation wall around the perimeter of the building, completing this scope of work in five weeks. We returned after steel was erected to place two levels of slab on deck, and will return to pour the sidewalks.
Ten Essex St
The concrete work at Ten Essex Street was started late in 2017 and carried through the tough New England winter. There were several times during this project that NAC employees were fighting subzero degree temperatures and pouring late into the night to keep this project on schedule. This new building is adjacent to existing brick buildings, so there were several pours to underpin those adjacent foundations. The base slab was placed in sections to accommodate a tight site and other subcontractors, but once in place, we were able to complete the one-sided foundation walls in five weeks despite difficult winter conditions. We completed the ramp and several of the slab on decks and will return to pour the sidewalks.
